Administrative / Biographical History

This school first opened on 24 May 1875 as Hexthorpe St James Infants School and closed on 22 June 1900 when staff and pupils 'went over to the new Board School'. The minutes of the Balby-with-Hexthorpe School Board are to be found at SB12. From June 1900 the school was known as Hexthorpe Board Infants' School, and Subsequently as Hexthorpe Council Infants' School. A nursery department was built in 1969 and opened in 1970. Sometime after 1974 the school became known as Hexthorpe First School. The school closed in July 1995 in order to merge with Hexthorpe Middle School on Urban Road (SR.143). This new school is called Hexthorpe Primary School and is open from September 1995.
