Scope and Content

These are records of the expenditure of Mary Anne Boulton, née Wilkinson. They cover the period from 1814, the year before her marriage to Matthew Robinson Boulton, to 1827, two years before her death; it is not clear why the records end at that time. The expenditure they record is varied, but the most common items of expenditure are clothing for herself and her children.

From 29 Sep. 1818 a distinction was made between Personal expenses and Household expenses; see the Cash Book, 1817-1819.

The records were formerly in five parcels, labelled as follows-
Sundry Bills and Expenses at Home in 1817-18.
M. A. Boulton's Private Books of Expenditure for years from 1817 to 1826 and Bills for 1825, 1826, and 1827; containing the following smaller parcels:

Mrs. Boulton. Books of Private Expenditure for years 1817 to 1827.
Private Bills, 1825.
Mrs. Boulton's Private Bills, 1826 and 1827.
Mrs. Boulton's Private Bills, 1827.
Mrs. Boulton's Private Bills, 1821-1822.
Mrs. Boulton's Private Bills, 1823.
Private Bills, 1824.

The Books and Bills are now arranged in separate series. Detailed lists have been made of the contents of the Cash Books; the Bills, too, have all been listed.
