Scope and Content

On the inside of the front cover is written An Alphabetical Catalogue of the Books in the Library at Towneley. The catalogue of this large collection is roughly alphabetical. Within each letter the books are classified under the headings 'Scriptures, Fathers & Divines', 'Controvertists', 'Historians', 'Philosophers', 'Mathematicians', 'Lawyers' and 'Miscellanies & Poets'.

The Towneley Library was used by Thomas Whitaker in his history of the parish of Whalley, first published in 1801. The Library was sold and dispersed in 1883.
