ACCOUNTS OF WORK FOR WOUNDED SOLDIERS

Scope and Content

This book was compiled for work done by convalescent soldiers in and straight after World War I. The scheme was organised in Oxford hospitals by Frances Spooner, wife of William Archibald Spooner (Warden of New College, 1903-24), and involved mainly embroidery and needlework. Money was raised by subscriptions, payments by soldiers, and receipts from exhibitions and sales.

The project was initiated in October 1916 and wound up four years later.

This document was transferred from the Centre for Oxfordshire Studies in November 1990 (as accession 3179), and was formerly referenced as Misc Spo 1.

Catalogued by Mark Priddey, August 1994.
