Administrative / Biographical History

The Diocese of Brechin largely covers the counties of Kincardine, Angus and Perth. In 1792 the Diocesan Library was founded to collect books and manuscripts for the improvement of the clergy. In 1962 the library was deposited with Dundee University.

Open for consultation subject to preservation requirements. Access must also conform to the restrictions of the Data Protection Act (2018), General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR, 2018) and any other relevant legislation or restrictions. Clinical information is closed for 100 years.

Custodial History

The bulk of the Brechin Library was held in store by the University of Dundee Library between its deposit in 1962 and 2016, at which point responsibility of its care was transferred to the University Archive. In 1962, the archives of the Brechin Diocese was also transferred to the University, along with this part of the library, both of which have remained in the care of the University Archive
