2185/LEB/4/5 German manuscript copy (18th cent -19th cent) of 'Contredanses Francoises arrangées pour Clavecin' According to Lucy Broadwood's manuscript annotations, she was given this book (with -/4/3-4) by the cousins of Miss M Dawkins of Bournemouth in Sep 1917. Frank Kidson had it bound for her but was unable to trace the source of the collection amongst his own library. She quotes his conclusions as to its possible origins; he supposes the tunes to be of French origin, published 1770s by an assortment of dancing masters: 'They must have been very popular at the County Assembly balls & in London'. nd [1770s]

According to Frank Kidson's manuscript notes pasted inside the cover, this is the 1st of a 2 volume anthology collected by Alexander Campbell, Scottish historian, musician and poet, and published by Oliver & Boyd, Edinburgh, in 1816. This is corroborated by an entry in the British Library catalogue. Kidson has annotated several pages. 1816

Containing an undated letter from Frank Kidson to Lucy Broadwood enclosing the repaired 'Universal Harmony Sheet' [no longer present], and a sample of the paper he used for the repair. From his letter, it appears that the following song-sheets were removed from the Universal Harmony Sheet during the conservation process.
