Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Penuel English Congregational Church was established in 1908 by 29 members of Porth English Congregational Church who were given permission to leave and establish a daughter church in Ynyshir. The first service was held on 26 April 1908 at Ynyshir Hall. A building fund was opened soon after and by August 1909 a site for the new chapel building had been selected. The opening ceremony was held on 30 March 1912. Penuel's first permanent minister was the Revd. T H Emanuel of Carmarthen. He was succeeded in 1923 by the Revd. David Overton, who was followed in 1943 by the Revd. Wernos Jones. Revd. Jones left the church in 1949 and no minister was appointed following his departure, with services led by local lay preachers. The cause declined to join the United Reformed Church in 1972 and remained independent. The church was still operational in 1978, but by 1984 had closed with a planning application submitted for conversion of the building to two bungalows. The building was demolished soon after and the site is now occupied by housing.
