Administrative / Biographical History

The Cardiff Burial Board was set up in about 1856, by Cardiff Borough Council, Glamorgan, (which constituted the board and initially held meetings at the close of the main council meetings). The exact status of the board in relation to the Council is unclear, but by 1879, it had effectively become a council committee, and minutes of its meetings are held in the main series of council minutes. The Burial Board purchased land for a cemetery at Roath, Glamorgan, at that time outside the town boundaries, and the cemetery opened in 1859.
