Scope and Content

The majority of these letters were written by Augustus Daniel, Director of the National Gallery (1929-1933), and concern Laurence’s art collecting, particularly his interest in and acquisition of paintings and drawings by P. Wilson Steer (1860-1942) - a memorial exhibition of Steer's works, organised by the Tate Gallery, was held at the National Gallery from 15 June to 7 August 1943 (see Tate Archive, ref. TG 92/45) - and a proposed exhibition of his work at Eton College. There is one letter each by Harold Isherwood Kay, Keeper and Secretary at the National Gallery (1934-1938), who bequeathed a drawing by Steer to the British Museum, and Charles Aitken, Director of Tate Gallery (1911-1930).
