LETTERS: Miss M Williams, [after her marriage Mrs Morrie [Morfudd] Conant] to her sweetheart, Captain Nigel Conant at Penrhos, Holyhead.
[The letters have been catalogued in the order which Mrs Conant filed them].
Apart from the first sent from Trearddur Bay, all were written when she was away as an ATS [Auxiliary Territorial Service] recruit during World War 2. Firstly sent from Sub. Reception Depot ATS, Bramcote Hills, Beeston, then c/o Mrs Telford, 89 Leyton Crescent , Cliftonside, Beeston, and Mrs Tugwell, 14 Lilac Crescent, Beeston.
The early letters discuss the training programme, social life, and that she will be away for 3 months, and hopes when she comes back that T[rearddur] Bay still remembers her.
Letters describe the convoys to Scotland and London, the scenery on route, snow drifts and how she has tried to write on the bus between billets.
She mentions that Jerry swooped around all night whilst billeted in Romford, and dropped one bomb behind the house.
She mentions blackouts, the sirens going quite often, air raids, bombs dropped quite near, the time spent waiting for orders, driving trucks around on garage duty, ordering clothes to keep warm, receiving the gifts he sends her, and cleaning buttons.
She talks about Canterbury Cathedral, and how valuable windows and moveable treasures have been removed, and that people are sleeping in the crypts.
She talks about their wedding and being married in her uniform.
[Letter 12] Appended:
NOTE: Description of Coventry immediately after bombing.
Wonderful people.
