David Ellis was born in Aberystwyth, North Wales, and educated at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, 1890-1896, graduating with a B.Sc. He went on to study at the University of London where he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Science and the University of Marburg where he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
He was appointed Lecturer in Botany and Bacteriology at the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College in 1904; Superintendent of the School of Pharmacy and of the Scottish School of Bakery at the Royal Technical College, Glasgow, in 1920; and Professor of Bacteriology at the Royal Technical College, 1925-1937.
