Scope and Content

Minutes, financial records, membership details, fieldwork and species surveys, 1970-2008.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Yorkshire Mammal Group (YMG) was established in 1970 by naturalist Dr Michael Thompson.
The group aimed to promote the study of mammals, particularly in Yorkshire, and to raise interest in mammalian fauna more generally. In 1996, the YMG moved towards collecting species records in a more systematic way and appointed founder Michael Thompson as Mammal Recorder, with the position subsequently held by James Mortimer and John Ray. In 2007, a preliminary atlas of North Yorkshire mammals, based on these recordings, was published. Further records were added to it until 2010.
The YMG has strong connections to other local, regional, and national conservation groups and continues to contribute to large-scale species surveys, as well to produce their own research projects on specific species.

Access Information

Records are open to the public, subject to the overriding provisions of relevant legislation, including data protection laws.
