Papers in this series originally formed part of the personal archive of Sir Richard Fanshawe (1608-1666), a loyal supporter of King Charles I and King Charles II, who served as English envoy to Portugal 1661 to 1663 and ambassador to Spain 1664 to 1666, and is also noted for his poetical works and his translations of Horace, Martial, Virgil, Camoens and Guarini. Also including many letters and despatches from major political figures of the seventeenth century, as well as drafts and copies of the replies, together with further correspondence, written to his widow after his death.
