Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Coventry and District Co-opertaive Society was founded in 1867 and was originally called Coventry Perserverance Co-operative Society. The society quickly progressed and by 1877 had a membership of 834. When they celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1917 they had a membership of 22,941 and in 1967 had 104,637. In 1991 the society merged to become Coventry and East Mercia Co-operative Society which in 2000 changed its name to become Heart of England Co-operative Society.
