Administrative / Biographical History

In 1891 J.C. Meggitt, a member of the Barry and Cadoxton Local Board, purchased property at 34 Kingsland Crescent, Barry, and gave free use of the premises to the Barry Nursing Association. The object of the association was to provide trained non-resident nurses to care for the poor and working classes in their homes and to provide non-trained resident helpers 'to take the mother's place' in the home during illness. Later, in 1895, the association acquired the use of the adjacent property (no. 36) for five years rent free. As a result, the Barry Nursing Association was able to establish a municipal accident and surgical hospital in 1900 paid for out of rates and voluntary donations, one of the first in Britain.
