Administrative / Biographical History

Fletcher & Stewart were formed in 1964 as a result of a merger between George Fletcher & Co Ltd, sugar machinery manufacturers founded in 1838 (and purchased by Booker Bros & Co Ltd in 1956), and Duncan Stewart & Co Ltd, whose patents and licences were purchased by Booker Bros & Co Ltd in 1958. The company operated out of Derby, England.

Fletcher & Stewart Ltd acquired Smith Mirrlees, sugar machinery manufacturers, Glasgow, around 1988 and changed its name to Fletcher Smith Ltd in c1990. Fletcher Smith Ltd was acquired by Fives Cail in 2001. This led to the creation of the Fives Cail Group: 5 companies dedicated to sugar engineering in India, Mexico and Brazil, who specialise in designing and building complete sugar plants and process equipment for sugar, for the the refining and bioethanol industries. The Fives Cail Group has offices in France, Brazil, India, UK and Mexico.
