Administrative / Biographical History

The correspondence relates to a publication regarding the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, [Weddell Sea Party], 1914-1916.

Shackleton's boat journey by Frank Worsley was first published in 1940. The publishing house of Hodder & Stoughton Ltd. republished the account in 1959. The book tells the story of the voyage of the James Caird from Elephant Island to South Georgia. Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton, Frank Worsley, Thomas Crean, Harry McNish, Timothy McCarthy and John Vincent undertook this voyage in 1916. Arriving at South Georgia Shackleton, Crean and Worsley made the first major trek across the island to the whaling station at Stromness. The steam tug Yelcho rescued the men on Elephant island in August 1916.
