John Powell started up his own business as an iron founder, chain and chain cable manufacturer and general ships’smith for the busy shipping port in Llanelli in 1850. By 1873, he had erected a small foundry and machine shop which was known as The Glanmor Foundry. He died in 1889 and later that year the foundry together with the ‘Old Foundry’ at Copperworks Road was sold at public auction.
