Llanelli Borough Council was established in 1894; Llanelli was confirmed as a chartered borough in 1913. Llanelli Borough Council was responsible for local government services, including health, water supplies, education, estates, public libraries, roads and highways. Llanelli Borough Council ceased to exist as a unit of local government in 1974. The town hall was opened in 1896 as the administrative centre for local government offices. The Llanelli Local Board of Health had previously been responsible for improving sanitation, drainage and water supplies.
