Masters Family of Mountain Ash, Papers

Papers relating to: the valuation of the Bailey's Arms public house, Mountain Ash, including inventories, 1892 & 1911; the sale of the Bailey's Arms to the Rhondda Valley & Ely Breweries Ltd., 1921; sketch plan of Bailey's Arms c.1911 by Gladys Armitage (nee Masters), 1987; solicitor's account for representing Bailey's Arms landlord following employee accident, 1910; the building, furnishing, installation of electricty and sale of 'Glenbrook', Bailey Street, Mountain Ash, 1896-1958; the building of 37 & 39 Springfield Terrace, Penrhiwceibr, and work at Albert Street, Mountain Ash, 1899-1926; Masters family contributions to the Pengeulan Building Co. and the Miskin Cottage Co., 1902-1945; plus miscellaneous household bills and receipts, and subscribers' cards for Mountain Ash & Penrhiwceiber Hospital and Hospital Operation Fund,1916-1926. Also, World War I postcard collection, 1915-1918.

The Masters family lived in Miskin, Mountain Ash. John Masters (d.1916) was landlord of the Baileys Arms. He and his wife Catherine Jane (nee Davies) had five children David (b.1892), Tom (b.1894), Hilda (b.1896), Alice (b.1900) and Gladys (b.1905). David was an apprentice mining surveyor when he volunteered for the Royal Engineers in 1915; Tom had trained as a teacher at the City of Leeds Training College and was teaching in the Rhondda valley when he volunteered for non-combatant duties with the Royal Army Medical Corps in the same year; in 1914 Hilda went to train as a teacher at St Mary's College, Bangor; the two younger girls were still in school. David died at the Battle of the Somme on the 11 July 1916. Tom died on the 23 March 1918 at Bapaume. Catherine died in 1926.
