Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Cardiganshire returned a Liberal Member of Parliament, from 1880 until 1966, and again from 1974 until 1992. The Liberal Party split in the early 1920s into the Coalition Liberals and the Independent Liberals, and after the by-election of 1921 they had separate associations in Cardiganshire. From 1923 until 1932 the county was represented by Rhys Hopkin Morris, an Independent Liberal MP. Roderic Bowen represented the county as its Liberal member of Parliament from 1945 until 1966, and it was represented by Geraint Howells, Liberal MP, from 1974 to 1992. The records demonstrate the problems of political organisation in a mainly rural constituency.
