University of Manchester Postgraduate Society Archive

The records in this archive date from the 1970s and 1980s. They include a set of Committee minutes, 1976-1989 (PGS/1), an incomplete set of annual reports, 1976/7-1985/6 (PGS/2), an incomplete set of Society newsletters, 1981-5 (PGS/3) and a small amount of ephemeral material concerning the Society's administration and activities (PGS/4).

The University's Postgraduate Society is believed to have been established in the mid- to late-1960s. its main function was to provide social facilities and events for the University's postgraduate students.

From 1969 until the early 2010s, the Society occupied the Schunck building in Burlington Street. This facility was generally known as the Burlington Rooms, and the Society later changed its name to the Burlington Society. The Burlington Rooms included at various times a coffee bar, a licensed bar, a games room, TV/reading room and the Behrens Room, opened in 1977, which was used for social events. The Society held discos, dances and film showings at the Burlington Rooms, and also arranged day trips for its members to local places of interest.

The Society was run by an elected committee, and was at various times represented on University and Union committees relevant to its work. Membership of the Society was theoretically very large, encompassing the University's postgraduate student population, and also included mature students. Membership included both University of Manchester and UMIST students, and the Society received grants from the University and Union to support its work.

The collection is open to any accredited reader.

The collection includes material which is subject to the Data Protection Act 2018. Under Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA), The University of Manchester Library (UML) holds the right to process personal data for research purposes. UML has made every attempt to ensure that all personal and sensitive personal data has been processed fairly, lawfully and accurately. Users of the archive are expected to comply with the Data Protection Act 2018, and will be required to sign a form acknowledging that they will abide by the requirements of the Act in any further processing of the material by themselves.
