Administrative / Biographical History
Struther Arnott (1934- ) was appointed Principal and Vice-Chancellor of St Andrew's University in 1986. He has received many honours: CBE 1996; Hon ScD St Andrews Laurenburg USA, 1994; Hon DSc Purdue University 1998; Hon LLD St Andrews, 2000; FRS 1985; and FRSE 1988.
He was educated at Hamilton Academy, Lanarkshire, Glasgow University (BSc, PhD) and King's College, London where he worked as a scientist in the Medical Research Council biophysics research unit 1960-70, as a demonstrator in physics 1960-67, director of postgraduate studies in biophysics 1967-70 and fellow from 1997. At Purdue University, Indiana, USA he held the post of Professor of molecular biology 1970-86, serving as head of Department of Biological Sciences 1975-80, Vice-President for research and dean, Graduate School 1980-86.
At Oxford University he was senior visiting fellow, Jesus College 1980-81, Nuffield research fellow, Green College 1985-86, and Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellow 1985. He acted as Governor of Sedburgh School from 1986-99. He has many publications in learned journals. After his retirement as Principal of St Andrews he returned to London where he is part of the Biological Structure Data Processing, Modelling and Visualisation Group within Biomedical Sciences at Imperial College, London. He is a world expert on fibre diffraction in the context of polynucleotide polysaccharide and polypeptide structures and muscle.
