Scope and Content

Images of staff, trustees and other persons associated with the National Gallery in some way.

NG67 comprises original and copy photographs, photographic prints of portraits and sculpture, contact sheets and transparencies.

Please note that where copy photographs are listed, the date(s) supplied in the date field relates to the date at which the copy was made, and not the date of the original photograph/artwork. These details are provided in the body of the description where they are available.

Administrative / Biographical History

Material contained within NG67 was collected, for example, from external sources and/or created by Gallery staff, and originally placed in History Files arranged by year by Library staff. At an unknown date all photographic images were removed from the History Files, and 'Visual File: Portraits' was created as a repository for images of persons associated with the Gallery in some way. Upon listing this series was given the reference NG67, but the title 'Visual File: Portraits' was retained. Other images removed from the History Files became part of Visual Files 1-4 or NG30.

Arrangement

When material was transferred from the History Files to form 'Visual File: Portraits' it was placed in folders arranged alphabetically by surname of person represented. This order has been retained when listing as NG67.

Two sub-series of group photographs follow the alphabetical sequence, as does a file containing images of unnamed persons.

Appraisal Information

NG67 previously contained photocopies of newspaper cuttings and other published material which bore images of staff, trustees or other persons associated with the Gallery. Upon listing these copies were considered to be of secondary, non-archival value and were removed to the relevant Information Files in the Archive office.

This series also contained a file entitled 'Visual File c1700-1900', containing photographs of wartime canteens at the Gallery, and early images of the interior and exterior of the Gallery. The former have been moved to NG30: the latter to Visual Files 1-4.
