Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
James McLennan and William Urquhart were operating the Dalkeith Brewery, Dalkeith, Scotland, from at least 1867. McLennan & Urquhart Ltd was registered in 1909 as a limited liability company to acquire the business of the same name. A bottling plant was opened in 1921 and the company took over William Burnett, bottlers, Burntisland, Fife, Scotland, in 1932 and David Cameron Ltd, brewers, Laurencekirk, Grampian, Scotland, in 1945. It was acquired by John Aitchison & Co Ltd, brewers, Edinburgh, Scotland, in December 1955. Brewing continued until 1958 when all beer production transferred to Edinburgh although bottling did not cease until 1961.
