Scope and Content

Wrexham Public Library was opened in 1887 and was run by Wrexham Borough Council. It collected a large body of material relating to the area; in 1974, this was transferred to Clwyd Record Office, Denbighshire Area Office. The material includes single items and larger collections from James, James and Hatch, solicitors, Wrexham, Denbighshire, who dealt with properties in Anglesey, Denbighshire and Flintshire; and C. G. Caldecott, a pharmaceutical chemist in Wrexham, who collected a series of lantern slides which covered a wide variety of subjects, including foreign tours of Japan, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Belgium and Spain, local topics such as ancient monuments, churches, historic houses and the countryside around Wrexham.

Scope and content: Records collected by Wrexham Library, 1620-1959, including the papers of James, James and Hatch, solicitors, including deeds relating to Bangor, Gresford, Holt, Llangollen, Minera, Ruabon and Wrexham, 1620-1911; papers relating to Wrexham and District, 1759-1963, including Erddig estate papers, 1922-1935; maps and plans, [18th century]-1906; papers of the Wrexham National Eisteddfod, 1931-1933; sale particulars and plans, 1855-1950; papers relating to education in Denbighshire, [c. 1872]-1913; miscellaneous, 1713-1959.; and series of glass lantern slides and glass negatives, compiled by C. G. Caldecott, [c. 1900]-[c. 1925].

Arranged into the following: deeds; Wrexham and district; maps and plans; Wrexham Royal National Eisteddfod; sale plans and particulars; education; miscellaneous; and lantern slides and glass negatives.

Access to some documents may be restricted due to Data Protection legislation, Denbighshire Archive Service will advise where this is the case. The lantern slides have been copied onto contact prints for public use to prevent deterioration of the originals.
