Administrative / Biographical History

The Carmarthenshire Petty Session Divisions were constituted under The Division of Counties Act 1828 and consist of eight divisions, namely, Carmarthen; Llanboidy; Llandilo; Llandovery; Llanelly; Llanfihangel-ar-Arth; Newcastle Emlyn and St Clears.

They were the lowest tier of the local justice system and tried less serious crimes such as minor theft, drunkenness and bastardy, if the crime became more serious it would be referred to the Quarter Sessions. From the late nineteenth century they also dealt with alcohol licensing.

The surviving records for Carmarthenshire span from 1872 up to 1975, the majority of the records are post 1900 and include licensing, court registers, fines and fees, convictions, case results and Magistrates minute books. The nineteenth century records consist of a few Magistrates minute books from 1891 for Carmarthen and Llanboidy districts and licensing registers from 1872 for Carmarthen and Llanelli districts.
