Scope and Content

The Crown Inn Charity was founded in 1586. It was funded from rents derived from leasing The Crown Inn (later Shaven Crown) in Shipton and associated land. Originally, funds were used for the upkeep of Shipton Bridge and of Stokers Bridge in Milton, with some monies going to provide relief for the poor of Shipton under Wychwood and Milton under Wychwood. By the 19th century, all funds were dedicated to the benefit of inhabitants of Shipton and Milton, in equal share. The charity continued to operate until 1969, when it was combined with the Shipton United Charities.

Deposited by Shipton Parish Council as accessions 2477 and 2528 in 1985 and 1986 and as accession 5493 in 2006.

Previously referenced as Shipton P.C. and recatalogued by Katherine Kinrade in January 2024.
