Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Jubilee 2000 was an international movement advocating a debt-free start to the Millennium through a one-off cancellation of international debts by the year 2000. The campaign was based on the scriptural idea of the Jubilee Year: periodically, every 7 x 7 years (i.e. 50 years) debts are forgiven and slaves set free, and 'liberty is proclaimed throughout the land'. The campaign began in 1996 and was promoted in over 40 countries around the world. Since the disbandment of the campaign after the new Millennium, another campaign has begun, established on the principles of Jubilee 2000, bearing the name Jubilee +. The Jubilee 2000 Welsh Coalition / Jiwbilî 2000 Cynghrair Gymreig campaign was very active in Wales. Cytûn: Churches Together in Wales / Cytûn: Eglwysi ynghyd yng Nghymru was established in 1990 in succession to the Council of Churches for Wales. Cytûn's priorities were given to encouraging and establishing new ecumenical partnerships for witness and service in Wales. As well as employing a field worker to meet these ends, in 1998, Cytûn also employed Ben Gregory as a field worker for the length of the Jubilee 2000 campaign, 1998-2001. His brief was to foster the churches' participation in the Jubilee 2000 campaign to cancel the international debts of the world's poorest countries, in co-operation with Christian Aid and CAFOD (which are agencies of Cytûn) and other members of the Jubilee 2000 campaign coalition.
