The collection comprises the papers of Roland Lyon Nosworthy Michell, including his diaries (1872, 1873 and 1878), journals (1870-1872, 1874-1876) and correspondence, together with research material for his publications including notes on the Dervish sects, of which Michell had a first hand knowledge.

Administrative / Biographical History
Roland Michell was born on 14 February 1847. He was educated at Christ Church College, Oxford. He lived in Egypt for many years, initially as Tutor to Prince Ibrahim Pasha, son of the Khedive of Egypt, 1870-1878. He later served as Chief of the Statistical Department, Revenue Survey of Egypt, 1878-1879, and Commissioner of Limassol, Cyprus, 1879-1911.
He published two works, An Egyptian Calendar for the Koptic Year 1295 , (Alexandria, 1877), and An Egyptian Calendar for the Koptic Year 1617 , (London, 1900). He died on 9 March 1931.

The papers have been arranged into four sections: diaries and journals; correspondence; research material, and miscellaneous, poems etc.
