Scope and Content

A joint hospital for treating small-pox cases was set up under the Isolation Hospital Acts in an agreement between four local government district councils: Chipping Norton Rural & Urban (Borough) District Councils & Witney Rural & Urban District Councils (separate collections exist for these organisations). The hospital was situated at Shipton Downs Farm, Shipton under Wychwood, which belonged to John Fowler Maddox, from whom premises were leased. The hospital seems to have closed in 1931 and contributory factors were the death of the lessor (in 1929) and expiry of the lease in 1931; in addition there appear to have been problems with the water supply which discouraged the contributing authorities from purchasing the property when it was offered upon expiry of the lease.

The records were deposited in 1993 as part of accession 3722 and catalogued by Christian Gilliam, archivist, in Feb 2011
