Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The militia armed forces of Britain were a vital part of homeland defences in the eighteenth century. The Militia Act of 1757 aimed to create a professional national military reserve.
To this end, each county was required to raise a fixed quota of men selected by compulsory ballot; however, if the person selected could afford to do so, he could pay to engage a substitute.
Those who were exempt varied from year to year but in general, the following were not selected: Poor men with one legitimate child, men under 5ft 2ins, members of universities, clergy, etc.
The Militia Act of 1757 required that each county pay for the militia out of the local rates.
