Scope and Content

A small collection of research notebooks of Eva Hibbert, a member of staff at the Manchester Municipal College of technology between 1901 and 1939. The documents include some of Hibbert's research and experimental notebooks on the chemistry of dyeing, as well as her student notebooks. The collection includes numerous samples of dyed cloth, which were used in tests on dye fasteners, and the effects of light and heat on dyed materials.

Administrative / Biographical History

Eva Hibbert (1881-1939) was studied chemistry at the Manchester Municipal School of Technology. She joined the staff of the School in 1901, and was a demonstrator in applied chemistry from 1911 to 1914, and thereafter assistant lecturer in applied (technological) chemistry. Although Hibbert was not a graduate of the University of Manchester, she was awarded a M.Sc.(Tech) degree by charter in 1916 in recognition of her academic work. Hibbert's research interests included volumetric analysis and the chemistry of dyeing. She worked closely in these areas with Edmund Knecht, the head of the department of technological chemistry, and with whom she authored New reduction methods in volumetric analysis (London 1925). Hibbert died in 1939.
