Both Pamir and Passat were former German sailing-ships used for general cargo which were bought (Pamir in 1931) by the Gustaf Erikson Line of Finland and used mainly for the commercial grain trade from Australia to Europe. Passat served as a storage vessel in Sweden 1944 while Pamir was seized by the New Zealand government in Wellington in 1941. Both ships were sold for breakage in 1951 but were re-sold to Heinz Schliewen for conversion to carry frozen meat as freight carriers at Kiel, Germany. Passat eventually became a museum and youth hostel at Lübeck. Their voyages in 1949 are believed to have been the last in the annual 'Great Grain Race' from Australia around Cape Horn to Europe.
