Scope and Content

The first Temple Cowley Congregational Church was build by the The Revd. David Martin and his wife in Temple Road in 1878, as a branch Church of the George Street Congregational Church. An independent congregation was established in 1886 and the first Communion service took place in January 1896. The church soon outgrew the original premises and in 1901 moved to the Old Military College Chapel. Later the church obtained a new site at the junction of Temple Road and Oxford Road, and built its present church in 1929–30, which was designed by G. Smith. During the 1930s the Congregation was boosted by workers from the Cowley Morris car plant. In 1972 the Congregational and Presbyterians Churches joined to form the United Reformed Church.

The records were deposited as Acc 6192 in July 2013. Catalogued by Alison Smith in February 2014.
