Administrative / Biographical History
The Earls of Pembroke and Montgomery (Herbert family) owned large areas of land in Glamorgan, including the Marcher Lordship of Gower and Kilvey, and the Borough and manor of Swansea. William Herbert was created 1st Earl of Pembroke and 1st Baron of Cardiff in 1551, and was also awarded the Lordship of Glamorgan by the Crown. At some point in the 18th c. , large portions of the Pembroke estates in the Neath area were sold to the Gnoll estate
