Administrative / Biographical History

Extinction Rebellion York is part of the international environmental pressure group Extinction Rebellion. Extinction Rebellion York was founded in around 2019, and focuses on non-violent direct action and civil disobedience, with the aim of urging decision makers and leaders to act and reduce the impact of climate change. The organisation is founded on a set of shared principles and works together to plan talks, actions, events and training activities. They also represent the York area in larger protests and demonstrations.
The group has three main demands: that the UK government declares a climate emergency, that the UK government needs to act now to reduce greenhouse gases to Net Zero by 2025, and the creation of a Citizens' Assembly on climate and ecological justice.
In 2019 Extinction Rebellion York were successful in their campaign to get City of York Council to declare a climate emergency. At that time the council also pledged to reach Net Zero by 2030.
