William Louden Reid (1845-1931), Obstetrician and Gynaecologist

Lantern slides relating to Reid’s fishing trips in the Western Isles of Scotland, Norway, Finland, Sweden and Canada together with commerically produced slides of scenery both in the UK and elsewhere.

William Louden Reid was born in Motherwell and graduated MB, CM from Glasgow University in 1866. He practised as a general practitioner in Glasgow and then spent some time abroad studying obstetrics and gynaecology. He took his MD in 1869 and became a Fellow of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1877, the same year in which he obtained the appointment of Outdoor Physician-accoucher to the Royal Maternity Hospital and Women’s Hospital. Reid subsequently became Obstetric Physician to the Royal Maternity Hospital; Professor of Midwifery and Diseases of Children in the Anderson College; Gynaecologist to the Western Infirmary; and Consulting Surgeon to the Royal Samaritan Hospital for Women. He was President of the Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow from 1905-1907 and was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Faculty in 1931.

Reid travelled extensively in Europe and America mainly in pursuit of game fish and was a keen photographer, as the lantern slides bear witness. His wife, Josie, herself an accomplished angler, accompanied him on his trips.
