Scope and Content

These papers concern the elder branch of

the Annesley family of Bletchingdon,

which at various times held the titles

of Viscount Valentia, Baron Altham, Earl

of Anglesey and Lord Mountnorris.

There are three other collections

containing papers about this family: E6

(the main estate collection), S11 (a

smaller collection of papers, mostly

concerning the Bletchingdon branch,

c.1800), and a small part of SL18, the

Aplin and Hunt papers. These three

collections are all closely linked by

their contents, and may perhaps derive

from a common source.

The papers in S13/4, however, almost all

concern the male line of Richard

Annesley, the 6th Earl of Anglesey,

which died out in 1844, and is not

represented well in the other

collections. This therefore gives the

papers a special interest.

The genealogy of the Annesley family is

not always straightforward. Therefore,

in all the collections which concern

them, members of the family bearing

frequently-used names (such as Arthur)

are distinguished by being assigned

Roman numerals. These refer to a

genealogy of the family, part of which

is printed at the end of this catalogue

(the full set of pedigrees may be found

at the end of E6).

It should be noted that all the papers

in this section are copies of the

original deeds. Dates for when they were

copied are given where they exist.
