Administrative / Biographical History

The Vagabond Club was founded on the 31 January 1921 in Milngavie, Glasgow, Scotland. The club was founded without a constitution, office bearers or even a name, with The Vagabond Club only being decided upon in December 1922  . The club was founded by a group of male friends who had gone for a day trip to Milngavie from Glasgow city centre by train. Having been caught in a rainstorm they retired to one of the members houses in Milngavie where it was decided that the club should be formed. The club's aim was to, "eat and drink in company, to look upon each other's faces, and also to attempt to discuss some seemingly serious subject". Its membership was an association of friends, mainly drawn from childhood friends who had been students of Glasgow Academy , the majority of whom had gone on to be students at the University of Glasgow . They were to meet on the last Saturday of alternate months and meetings involved unstructured discussions or excursions. Summer camps were held and visits to places such as Largs, North Ayrshire, Scotland. Eventual office bearers were a president and secretary but beyond this the club was informal. It appears to have continued after 1926 but was never an officially recognised club of the University of Glasgow.
