The correspondence covers the period after the disappearance of the British Naval Northwest Passage Expedition, 1845-1848 (leader Sir John Franklin) and much of the correspondence deals with the subsequent search expeditions sent to the Arctic which endeavoured to find Franklin, his men or a written record of their fate.
