3. Letter from GI Smith to David Owen (Executive Chairman, United Nations Technical Assistance Board), 2 June 1962. Account of visit made by Smith to the three territories of Central African Federation. Reports on economic and political problems and on pressure by Africans for the dissolution of the Federation. (Typescript, 41 pages).
4. Some Personal Observations at Addis Meetings, by GI Smith. 30 May 1963. Report of conference held in Addis Ababa to discuss African unity and the establishment of an organisation to promote this aim. (Typescript, 3 pages, 2 copies).
5. Letter from GI Smith to U Thant. February 1964. Report on situation in Southern Rhodesia prior to UDI. Includes account of meetings with Ndabaningi Sithole, Joshua Nkomo and W.J. Harper. (Typescript, 2 pages).
6. Report by GI Smith on meetings between himself, Edgar Whitehead, Roy Welensky and other Southern Rhodesian Ministers to discuss the possibility of declaring UDI after the dissolution of Federation. (Typescript, 4 pages).
7. Letter from GI Smith to U Thant, 14 February 1964. Account of meeting of Organisation of African Unity, Dar es Salaam. Main topic for discussion was the Tanganyika mutinies and the provision of troops from other African states to quell them. (Typescript, 4 pages).
8. Report by GI Smith to U Thant on Rhodesian situation and the tactics of African nationalists in the light of Field's (the P.M.) uncompromising attitude. (Typescript, 9 pages).
9. Letter from GI Smith to U Thant, describing reaction to dismissal of Field as PM and election of Ian Smith as his successor. (Typescript, 3 pages).

Also gives Smith's reaction to his apparent nomination by various African states as their candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Secretariat. (Typescript, 5 pages).
12. Letter from GI Smith to Jose Rolz-Bennett (Deputy Chef de Cabinet, United Nations). 17 April 1965. Report on African nationalist policies in Southern Rhodesia. (Typescripts 3 pages).
13. Draft report on Educational and Training Programme for the purpose of arranging for Education and Training Abroad for South Africans. 18 June 1964. Report called for by Security Council resolution. Gives UN response to needs of black South Africans in the light of restricted educational opportunities under Apartheid. (Typescript, 30 pages).
14. 'Preliminary note on major development projects requiring financial assistance from institutions within the UN family'. Submitted by Dr Erik Westerland, Governor of the province of Stockholm and Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister of Nyasaland. Identifies areas of high priority for U.N. aid, namely education, transport and land reclamation. (Typescript,

15. 'Preliminary note on the conceivable measures regarding Nyasaland's currency and foreign exchanges'. Submitted by Dr Erik Westerland (see 14). Deals primarily with the currency problems associated with the dissolution of the Central African Federation. (Typescript, 5 pages).
