St. Margaret's church is in the north of Oxford, on the corner between St. Margaret's Road and Walton Street. It was originally planned as a chapel of ease to the church of St. Philip and St. James, when its foundation stone was laid in 1882, and dedicated in 1884. Then in 1896, it was decided to turn St. Margaret into a parish church in its own right, taking land from SS. Philip and James and Summertown (note that some important material in the church may be found at PAR216/18).
In 1976, St. Margaret was united with SS. Philip and James, and in 1982 SS. Philip and St. James was closed. In 1985 St. Margaret was united with St. Giles.
Most of the records of St. Margaret were originally deposited with the Bodleian Library in 1982, and later transferred to Oxfordshire Archives. Further deposits were made directly with Oxfordshire Archives in 1985 as Accession Number 2382, February 1998 as Accession Number 4328 and in 2003 as Accession Number 5091. Two Appendices respectively list the contents of each accession and provide a concordance of old and new references.
