Administrative / Biographical History

The correspondence and papers listed here were found in files in transfer boxes bearing titles similar to the headings given to the following sections. The arrangement as found seems to have been largely that by which the papers were filed as current papers.

The section headed 'General Correspondence' was mainly correspondence with the members of the Society and with the casual enquirer about the Society's avtivities. Filing instructions were written in red ink at the top of letters, from which it appears that the letters were filed alphabetically by name of correspondent and by year, each year's correspondence requiring two transfer boxes.

From residual evidence, boxes of correspondence for years earlier than 1906 survived, but some time ago the earlier boxes were weeded, letters from prominent members being assigned to the 'Autograph Collection' while the remainder must have been destoryed. Some emply tile covers were found with destruction instructions written on the outside, presumably referring to the residual items.
