Administrative / Biographical History

MacBrayne Hall was founded in 1923, in memory of David MacBrayne, owner of the Glasgow and Highland Royal Mail Steamers, by his son Laurence MacBrayne. It was extended twice, in 1930 and then in 1948, finally comprising three houses in Park Circus Place. It accommodated and catered for 74 male students with some preference given to those from the Western Isles and Highlands. In 1972 MacBrayne Hall Annexe was opened as a female students' house with accommodation for 28 students. In the late 1980s the Hall was refurbished again which turned the residence into self contained flats as the demand for catered halls had dropped.

In 2000 the University sold 9 Park Circus, but retained the remainder of MacBrayne Hall. They also made slight changes at this point to allocate three attic flats to members of staff or postgraduate students who come to the University to study and bring their families with them. There is currently (2007) one part-time member of the wardening staff living in MacBrayne Hall alongside the student residents.
