Custodial History

Little is know about the early owners and occupiers of the farm at Westermains. The farm was probably originally a farm of the castle at the Peel (now Peel Park), and is mentioned in a charter of 1670 confirming the granting of a burgh to the Earl of Wigtown in an earlier charter. In 1855 Westermains was owned by Mr Wotherspoon and occupied by James Barrie. By 1865 the owner was Alexander B Freeland, and the tenant was John Mitchell, who was later superseded by Robert Mitchell. The trustees of Alexander Freeland owned the property until c1914, when James Fraser of Thistle Bank, Kirkintilloch, bought the farm, and the Fraser family continued to live there for many decades.
