Administrative / Biographical History

Francis Napier, 10th Lord Napier, was born on 15 September 1819 the son of William John Napier, the 9th Lord Napier, and Elizabeth Cochrane-Johnstone. He inherited his father's title on 11 October 1834 to become the 10th Lord Napier.

Napier was a diplomat and colonial adminstrator and served as British Minister to the United States, Netherlands, Russia, and Prussia before becoming Governor of Madras in 1866, a role he held until 1872. For a short period in 1872 Napier also served as acting Viceroy of India. He died in Florence, Italy on 19 December 1898.
