Administrative / Biographical History
Mossgiel Steamship Co Ltd was incorporated c1894 as a shipowning company in Glasgow, Scotland. The company traded in goods with Mediterranean ports and built up its own fleet of steamers to undertake the trade. In 1958 , the company's directors agreed to an amalgamation with the Ellerman group of companies of Glasgow, which included shipping companies who already had strong trading links with the Mediterranean, Americas, South Africa and the Far East. These companies included Ellerman City Line Ltd , Ellerman Lines Ltd , Ellerman & Bucknall (Steamships) Co Ltd , Ellerman & Papayanni Lines Ltd and Hall Line Ltd . By 1958, the Mossgiel Steamship Co Ltd was carrying goods to the West Indies, west Italy and Venezuela. Following its acquisition by Ellerman's, the company worked closely with the Ellerman & Papayanni Lines Ltd, purchasing a ship from them in 1968 and trading on similar routes. The company was dissolved in 1994 .
