Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Caledonian Brewing Co Ltd, Edinburgh, Scotland, was incorporated on 5 May 1987. It was created through a management buy-out in 1987, which was headed by the former manager Dan Kane and the former brewmaster Russell Sharp of Lorimer & Clark's Caledonian Brewery. The Caledonian Brewery had been owned by Vaux of Sunderland, England, from 1919 to 1987, and had been closed in 1985.
The Caledonian Brewing Co Ltd has been continuing to brew beer in the original premises of Lorimer & Clark's Caledonian Brewery dating from 1869 with traditional methods. In 1994 the brewery suffered from a fire in the maltings, and rebuilding of the most badly affected areas occurred in 1995. A second fire in 1998 destroyed one of the three original coppers dating from 1869.
The end of 1994 saw the brewery winning contracts for new business both national and international, and brewing continues today, specialising in traditional Scottish ales. The company has an increasing export market including France, the USA, Canada and Sweden.
In 1998 the company took over the brand of Calder's keg beers (Calder's Brewery in Alloa, Scotland) on contract from Carlsberg-Tetley, and in 1999, when Vaux ceased trading, it bought back the Lorimer & Clark brand name.
