Papers: Agreement for the employment of William Williams as a miner with the Gold Coast Colony of West Africa (Obuasi, Ghana), [c. 1900].

A diary kept by William Williams regarding his prospecting work and the outbreak of the Ashanti rising, the miners withdrawal to Beckwai, the arrival of the relief column and the subsequent fighting around Beckwai, 1900.

Also includes a description of the previous two items by Sotheby Parke Bernet, 1977.

Administrative / Biographical History

William Williams [alive 1900] of Llanddyfnan nr. Llangefni (Anglesey) was employed as miner with the Ashanti and the Gold Coast Colony of West Africa (Obuasi, Ghana) [c.1900]. He witnessed the Ashanti uprising against the British occupation and recorded the miners withdrawal to Beckwai, the arrival of the relief column and the subsequent fighting.
